Elk Fun
A friend of mine sent along this video to me for enjoyment. I thought it was fun to watch and thought I would share with my blogging friends. Hopefully, you will find it enjoyable!

You never know what's going on in a critters' mind. Looks like it really wanted to kick that puddle's butt!
Ain't that just like a kid. Give them a puddle and they have to run through it. Got to love it.

Mel, Interesting. This looks like a juvenile. I've seen young deer demonstrate similar behavior when they are too young to confront a mature animal of the same species. I witnessed something similar about two years ago. A faun was running and jumping, circling and kicking while its mother was interacting with a buck. Thanks for sharing.
I have seen whitetail deer fawns do the same as this young elk. Water play seems to be important to all species...;)

Young animals often enjoy playing in the water, that is no different for elk and deer.
I think it is the movement of the water and the noise that attracts them into a frenzy, perhaps the cooling effect of the water plays a role too.

Othmar - Thanks for the insight. I am not sure what causes the reaction, but, I sure enjoyed watching it transpire. That is interesting that other wildlife behave in a similar manner.

That's a cool video. Do you know if it was taken with a trailcam of some sort, or was your friend actually that close to the elk? Either way, what a hoot!
Troutrageous! - I am not 100% sure, but, I believe that it was caught on video in person. Outdoor enjoyment in real time!

Agree with Othmar. Almost all young play in exuberant ways. And many species appear to abjectly enjoy playing with water, including lots of birds. You should see wild parrots at play. There's no question animals enjoy their leisure time.
I'm not a sportsman, but I am a photographer. So I spend much of my time in the wilderness quietly watching wild animals for hours on end. Last week I saw two first-year fawns leaping and darting and chasing each other around ruins in a remote park, while mum kept a watchful eye. I can understand why fawns stay with mum for a year after birth. They would have been oblivious to a predator had the doe not been there to look out for them.
A pure joy to watch. Thank you for this video! I wish everyone could see the private lives of animals that I've had the privilege to watch. It would change the way many people feel about animal consciousness, I think.
